I Am A Barbarian is only one of two historical fictions written by Burroughs, the other being The Outlaw of Torn, but unlike Torn this novel slavishly follows historical fact. Though written in this novel wasn’t published until after Burroughs’ death and in my opinion probably one of the weakest of his novels. He had started his final series, the disappointing and creatively stagnant Venus/Amtor novels, in I AM A BARBARIAN is one of those novels- the tale of a Briton given to Caligula as a slave and taken to Rome. Written from a first hand account, this is an enjoyable departure from Burroughs' often over the top cliff hanger comic book style yarns. There is a more serious subdued tone at work here.
